John Peter Archer
Social Sub-Committee
John leads on governance and operations for the Master Charitable Trust, a registered charity and donor advised fund launched by C. Hoare & Co., the UK’s oldest private bank, and supports philanthropists to simplify their charitable giving and maximise their impact. John’s career started in international development and advocacy, supporting communities in protracted conflict zones and isolated rural areas. He has cofounded two award-winning non-profits to tackle health inequality in Myanmar and sanitation inequity in emerging cities. In 2018, John was recognised in the Forbes’ 30 social entrepreneurs under 30 in Europe.
Celia Atherton OBE
Trust President, Chair of the Social Sub-Committee
Celia has worked in social care, social justice and research. She helped to establish Research in Practice, which supports evidence-informed practice with children and families, young people and adults. Celia also oversaw the creation of the Dartington School for Social Entrepreneurs and LandWorks, an award-winning charity providing a supported route back into employment and the community for people in prison or at risk of going to prison. She has been a trustee of Scope and of LandWorks. Celia was awarded an OBE in 2007 for services to children and families and is the current Chair of the Trust’s Social Sub-committee.
Theresa Bartlett
Trust Vice Chair, Member of all Committees
Theresa is the current Chair and first woman to hold the office. She is a great, great granddaughter of Sir Halley. Theresa brings to the Trust her previous professional experience of working in the City in the Insurance Broking Sector. Her work for the Trust is also informed by advisory work for the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Dr James Bunn
Medical Sub-Committee
James is a Lead for Child Health for WHO in Sierra Leone. Prior to this he was a paediatrician in Liverpool and has been Associate Professor in Community Health in Malawi. He is a member of the Christian Medical Fellowship. His interests are in medical education, nutrition and infection, particularly where innovation can improve child outcomes in low-resource settings.
Louisa Elder
Trust Chair, Member of the Social Sub-Committee
Louisa is a daughter of Lord Ian Stewartby and great, great granddaughter of Sir Halley. She is currently the Vice Chair of the Board. Louisa has experience as a former head-hunter, specialising in recruitment for the voluntary and charitable sector. Her expertise has helped to ensure the Trust maintains its record in recruiting exceptionally high calibre Trustees to the Board and staff to manage its day-to-day business.
Jay Evans
Medical Sub-Committee
Jay is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Interactive Health Ltd (IHL). He has worked internationally in global health for more than a decade. In tandem with his role at IHL, he is currently a Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, an Associate Researcher at the University of Copenhagen, and serves in the faculty of the Advanced Programme in Digital Health with ISTCE in Lisbon. Jay supports the NHS Digital Health Leadership Programme together with Imperial College London. He is also a Fellow of the Faculty for Rural Remote & Humanitarian Health within the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.
Vivienne Evans OBE

Viv is the Chief Executive of Adfam, the national organisation for children and families affected by someone else’s substance misuse. She has a long history of senior positions in the public and charity sectors with a background in drug and alcohol education, prevention and young people, and families and substance misuse policy and practice. Vivienne is a former member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) and chaired its working group on the implementation of the report of the inquiry into the children of problem drug users − Hidden Harm. She is a board member of ISSUP (the International Society of Substance Use Professionals) and Alcohol Change UK.
Shermara Fletcher-Hoyte
Religious Sub-Committee
Shermara has extensive experience in homelessness, faith, grassroot community organising, leadership development and public life. She is the principal officer for Pentecostal, Charismatic and Multi-cultural Relations at Churches Together in England; an international peace ambassador for the world federation of world peace, and Patron of the London Refugee Fund. Shermara also writes and broadcasts about theology, housing and politics.
Kate Garbers
Social Sub-Committee
Kate works as an Independent Modern Slavery Consultant, Researcher and Advisor, as well as being a Visiting Research Fellow at the Rights Lab (University of Nottingham). She is currently on the Board of Directors for Liberate UK, a new organisation providing support to survivors. She has worked in the anti-slavery sector for the last 15 years working directly with survivors, law enforcement agencies and governments on how to effectively tackle the issue of trafficking and modern slavery. She is the Co-Founder and former Director of the anti-slavery NGO Unseen. Until 2023 she was Chair of trustees for Hope at Home, which provides safe homes for survivors of modern slavery.
Amy Holcroft
Religious Sub-Committee
Amy is the daughter of Dr Duncan Stewart and great, great granddaughter of Sir Halley. A qualified solicitor, she spent the earlier part of her career as a corporate and commercial lawyer and has specialised in data protection law since 2008. She currently works as the Chief Privacy Officer for Twilio Inc. and was formerly the Chief Privacy Officer for Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Her legal expertise has recently informed the Trust’s ‘conversion’ to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
Dr Judith Johnson
Medical Sub-Committee
Judith is a Clinical Psychologist, and Reader at the University of Manchester and Director of the Manchester Clinical Academic Centre. She holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Manchester and a ClinPsyD (practitioner doctorate) from the University of Birmingham. She is a mental health and healthcare research expert specialising in workforce wellbeing and provider-patient communication. Her research has been published in leading journals, including the BMJ and Academic Medicine and Clinical Psychology Review, and featured by the Guardian and Independent newspapers, BBC News & BBC Radio 4.
Dr Mzwandile A Mabhala

Andi is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Derby. His research interests centre on socio-economic determinants of inequalities in health and social justice. His recent research has had a focus on marginalised population groups and under-researched subjects including homeless people, and substance misuse.
Christine Morgan
Religious Sub-Committee
Christine worked in BBC Religion and Ethics, as a producer and editor in radio and television programming before being appointed as Head of Religion and Ethics, Radio. This included output for the domestic networks, World Service and online, and delivering for audiences of all faiths and none. Since leaving the BBC, she has published a book charting 50 years of Radio 4’s ‘Thought for the Day’. She is also a trustee for Oasis Charitable Trust.
Hugh Richardson
Finance Sub-Committee
Hugh spent 20 years in investment banking and general management with S.G. Warburg before becoming a bursar at an Oxford University college and a director of finance at a leading school. He has been a trustee of many charities including those involved with the arts, urban regeneration, international development, sport, and men’s health, and remains involved in a range of voluntary activities.
Sophie Stewart

Sophie Stewart is the daughter of Dr Duncan Stewart and a great-great-granddaughter of Sir Halley Stewart. She has worked in marketing and communications for over 30 years across a range of sectors including telecommunications, financial services and consumer publishing in both the UK and Australia. Sophie currently works as a Senior Marketing Manager in the Innovation division of BT Group and joined the Board of Trustees of the Sir Halley Stewart Trust in 2025.
Andrew Wauchope
Honorary Treasurer, Member of the Finance Sub-Committee
Andrew has specialised in investment management and the charity sector throughout his 30 years in the investment industry. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and a former visiting lecturer at the Baynes Business School. He is a trustee of the Chartered Accountants Benevolent Association, The Institute of Chartered Accountants Charities, The Solicitors Benevolent Fund and the Harrow Mission Trust. He also sits on the Court of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers, a London Livery Company. He is currently an external advisor to The Institution of Civil Engineers and the RCN Charity. Andrew is the Trust’s current Honorary Treasurer.
Reverend Professor David Wilkinson
Chair of the Religious Sub-Committee
David is a Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion, Durham University and Director of Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science. Before working in Durham as a theologian he was an astrophysicist, and then studied theology at Cambridge before becoming a Methodist minister in inner-city Liverpool. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, with his current work involving the relationship between Christian theology and contemporary culture. Professor Wilkinson is the current Chair of the Trust’s Religious Sub-committee.
Professor John Wyatt
Chair of the Medical Sub-Committee, Member of the Religious Sub-Committee
John is Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics and Perinatology, at University College London. He is also a senior researcher at the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, Cambridge. He is currently President of the Christian Medical Fellowship, and a Council member of the Medical Defence Union. His areas of expertise include research into the causation and prevention of brain damage in new-born babies; medical care of new-born babies in developing countries; and ethical, legal and philosophical dilemmas in health care at the beginning of life. He is now retired from frontline medical practice and is focusing on the ethical, philosophical and theological issues raised by rapidly advancing technology. Professor Wyatt is the current Chair of the Trust’s Medical Sub-committee.
Finance Sub-Committee
The financial affairs of the Trust are carefully managed by a Sub-Committee of Trustees, which meets quarterly with financial advisors to review the investment portfolio, management accounts, key risks and financial controls and make appropriate decisions and recommendations to the Board.
The Honorary Treasurer, Mr Andrew Wauchope, oversees the investment portfolio. He is assisted by Nikki Loan of Peters Elworthy & Moore (PEM) who maintains the financial records of the Trust and prepares financial reports for the Trustees’ meetings together with the Annual Accounts. They are joined on the Finance Sub-Committee by Mr Henry Stewart, Mr Hugh Richardson and other representatives from PEM. The Chair and Deputy Chair are also ex officio members.
