General application guidelines
You may be new to completing grant applications, or you may never have applied for funding from The Sir Halley Stewart Trust. Our application guidelines are designed to help you understand what we are looking for and how to complete your application clearly and effectively. This is equally as important if you have previously made an application, as our guidelines and policy can change over time.
Use of AI tools in the preparation and submission of grant applications
The Trust recognises that artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others, are becoming increasingly common in professional environments and can offer benefits to applicants. However, we also understand the potential risks AI may present to the accuracy and integrity of an application and, more broadly, to the privacy and confidentiality of data.
Our guidelines set out the Trust’s position on the appropriate use of AI in the preparation and submission of grant applications and guidance on the potential risks to consider when using AI in the application process.
Monitoring Guidelines
The reporting guidelines that all grantees commit to fulfilling when they accept a Trust grant. Please note that payment of funding instalments and possible future grant awards are contingent on grantees meeting these reporting requirements.
Grant Conditions
Example standard Grant Conditions agreement, although please note this will be tailored to each project and special additional conditions may be included depending on the project.
Longer-term outcomes and impacts evaluation
The 2024 report of a project piloting an Outcomes and Impact Review Programme for the Trust, conducted by Helix Research and Evaluation. The aims of the pilot were to design and implement an in-house approach to mapping and reviewing the outcomes and impacts of current and future Trust-funded projects.
This is now an ongoing programme for the Trust. Following the completion of grants, all grantees must complete an outcomes questionnaire and three years later an impact questionnaire.
Our Theory of Change
Applicants may find it helpful to view the Trust’s Theory of Change.
“My field of research doesn’t really exist and nobody had tried to do what I was doing before. You seemed like you might take a risk and fund me where many others hadn’t.”
